Top Highlights from Shopify DotDev 2026 (And What They Mean for Your Shopify Store)

I recently attended Shopify DotDev 2026, Shopify's annual developer conference, and one message came through loud and clear:

AI is changing the way people shop.

This wasn't just another conference filled with new features and technical updates. Shopify shared a clear vision for the future of commerce - one where AI assistants help customers discover, research, compare, and even purchase products.

If you own a Shopify store, these changes will affect how customers find your products over the next few years.

Here are my biggest takeaways from DotDev 2026 and what I think you should be doing today.

1. Your Products Need to Be AI-Ready

The biggest topic throughout the conference was Agentic Commerce.

Instead of customers browsing dozens of websites themselves, AI assistants are becoming capable of researching products, answering questions, comparing options, and recommending the best choice.

That means your product pages are no longer written only for human visitors - they're also being interpreted by AI.

If your product descriptions are thin or missing important details, AI will have less confidence recommending your products.

What you should do

Review your product pages and ask yourself:

  • Does this explain exactly what the product is?
  • Who is it designed for?
  • What problem does it solve?
  • What makes it different from competing products?

The more complete your information, the easier it is for AI to understand your products.

2. Shopify Catalog Is Becoming More Important Than Ever

One of the most exciting announcements was the continued evolution of Shopify Catalog.

Shopify is creating a structured product catalog that helps AI platforms understand product information consistently - from specifications and variants to pricing and inventory.

Rather than every AI platform building separate integrations with every merchant, Shopify is becoming the trusted source of product data.

What you should do

Complete every field you can:

  • Product descriptions
  • Specifications
  • Product attributes
  • Variants
  • Materials
  • Dimensions
  • High-quality images
  • Accurate inventory

Rich product data isn't just good for customers anymore - it's becoming essential for AI.

3. Agentic Storefronts Could Become a Major Sales Channel

Another exciting development is Agentic Storefronts.

Instead of relying only on customers visiting your website, Shopify is building infrastructure that allows AI shopping assistants to discover and recommend products directly from your store.

Think about how Google Shopping changed ecommerce years ago.

This feels like the next evolution.

If AI becomes the first place customers begin researching products, you'll want your store ready.

4. AI Discovery Is the Next Evolution of SEO

For years, I've focused on helping stores improve their visibility in Google.

That still matters.

But after DotDev, it's clear that merchants also need to think about visibility inside AI.

I don't see this replacing SEO.

I see it expanding SEO.

The stores that succeed will optimize for both search engines and AI assistants.

5. Rich Product Content Matters More Than Ever

One theme came up repeatedly during the conference:

The stores with the best product information will have an advantage.

Instead of writing:

Premium Wireless Headphones

Write something like:

Premium wireless headphones with active noise cancellation, 40-hour battery life, Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity, and studio-quality sound for travel, work, and everyday listening.

The more questions your product page answers, the better.

I also recommend adding:

  • Frequently Asked Questions
  • Buying guides
  • Compatibility information
  • Installation instructions
  • Care instructions
  • Shipping information

Every additional piece of useful information helps customers - and helps AI understand your products.

6. Your Brand Is Becoming Part of Your Product Data

One point I found particularly interesting is that AI doesn't only look at your website.

It learns from your presence across the web.

That includes:

  • Your social media profiles
  • Customer reviews
  • Blog articles
  • Brand mentions
  • Product information published elsewhere

The more consistent and trustworthy your brand appears online, the easier it becomes for AI to recommend your business confidently.

7. Stop Thinking About Keywords - Start Thinking About Answers

Traditional SEO often encouraged merchants to focus on keywords.

AI works differently.

Instead of looking for repeated phrases, AI is trying to understand products.

Ask yourself:

"What questions would a customer ask before buying this product?"

Then answer every one of those questions directly on the page.

When your product page genuinely helps customers make a buying decision, it also becomes much more useful to AI.

8. AI Will Become Another Way Customers Buy From You

The biggest takeaway I left with wasn't one specific feature.

It was Shopify's vision for where ecommerce is going.

Just as merchants learned to sell through Google, Facebook, Instagram, and marketplaces, AI is becoming another important discovery channel.

Customers will increasingly ask questions like:

  • "What's the best espresso machine under $1,000?"
  • "Recommend hiking boots for rocky terrain."
  • "Find me a standing desk for a small home office."

Your goal is to make sure your products are the ones AI recommends.

What I Would Do If I Owned a Shopify Store Today

If I were reviewing a Shopify store after attending DotDev, I'd focus on these five priorities:

Improve every product description

Write detailed, helpful descriptions that explain exactly what the product is, who it's for, and why someone should choose it.

Complete every product attribute

Don't leave fields empty. Materials, dimensions, compatibility, colors, specifications, and variants all provide valuable context.

Add FAQs to your product pages

If customers ask the same questions repeatedly, answer them before they have to ask.

Create educational content

Buying guides, comparisons, tutorials, and helpful articles build authority and give AI more confidence in your expertise.

Keep your product data current

Accurate pricing, inventory, images, and specifications improve both customer trust and AI recommendations.

Final Thoughts

Walking away from Shopify DotDev 2026, I wasn't thinking about one new feature or API.

I was thinking about how quickly the way people shop is changing.

AI is becoming part of the buying journey, and Shopify is building the tools to help merchants take advantage of that shift.

The good news is that preparing for AI doesn't require a complete rebuild of your store.

It starts with something much simpler: creating better product content, keeping your product data accurate, and making it as easy as possible for both people and AI to understand what you sell.

The merchants who invest in that today will be in a much stronger position as AI-powered commerce continues to grow.
